Er... I was trying to compile ipmitool-1.8.8 on Fedora6 (Zod) and got:
open.c:53:29: error: linux/compiler.h: No such file or directory
Searching for linux/compiler.h in the archives, I noticed that there
was a diff for configure.in, 2006-09-14, in aid of better detection of
linux/compiler.h, which is after ipmitool-1.8.8 2006-05-15; so I cut
and pasted it, starting
retrieving revision 1.63
retrieving revision 1.64
diff -C2 -d -r1.63 -r1.64

Suggestions gratefully received :-)
I did also try the RedHat rpm, but:
# rpm -i /home/dist/ipmitool-1.8.8-1.rhel4.i386.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
libcrypto.so.4 is needed by ipmitool-1.8.8-1.rhel4.i386
libreadline.so.4 is needed by ipmitool-1.8.8-1.rhel4.i386
