        3com - 3c501 cards circa 1987
        DEC  - circa 1985 (although DECnet rewrote the MAC by default)
        generic - circa 1996

        in the first two cases, the vendor had tools to re-write the mac 
        inthe latter case, get the money back and buy better cards.
