Hi all -

After being introduced to the IPSwitch Instant Messenger by a co-worker, I
found that I really liked it and wanted to learn more. So, I've set up the
server in a pseudo-production environment, setting it up as it would be
should I release this to the general company. In this case, I'm trying to
have the server authenticate user log-in's against our WindowsNT domain,
rather than having to manually add each new user as I go along (which would
be a major pain).

I've run into a few problems, but with enough time and testing, I think I
figured it out.

After setting up the server, I'm able to log into the IMServer using my
domain information (yay!). However, when viewing the list of users
(everyone in the domain), the user list starts out with the little blue
question mark, then everyone reverts to the greyed out smiley - including
myself. Since another user is also participating in this test (and is
logged in), I would expect that I would see him with the yellow smiley.

Tip #1 - Here's why I'm not seeing a yellow smiley: I'm looking at the
list under the "NT Server" heading. Also, trying to send a message to a
user under that heading simply will not work. Why? Because it's a user
that the application is using to authenticate against - it's not a user
that the IMServer can deliver a message to. In order to deliver a message,
you have to use the syntax "[EMAIL PROTECTED]". To do
this, just add the user you want to send a message to under the "Personal
Contacts" list. Be sure to use the proper syntax.

What would be nice would be a list provided by the IMServer that users can
choose from. Or, at least have the user enter in the name and have the
application finish the "@NTPDCservername.domain.com" part automatically.

Tip #2 - Under Public Address List on the IMServer, make sure you uncheck
the username list provided by the NT server, especially if your userlist is
long. When the messenger client starts up, the initial refresh of users
will be *much* faster which helps on slow machines.

I do have one question that hopefully someone can answer: When I make a
change on the Public Address List on the IMServer and then refresh my
client, nothing changes. Is there something that I'm doing wrong? Logging
off and then back on seems to do the trick, but then what's the point of
refresh? Is this what the "Client Upgrade/URL path" is all about in the
"General" settings on the IMServer?

Anyway, I hope my tips are helpful and I'm not repeating what anyone else
has said. If I am being repetitive, I'll just stick to asking questions
for a bit.

Thanks to everyone for their time!
