Fred

There is a document at the knowledge base with this problem. I looked at my log server and I found the same problem.

Question/Problem: What is the cause of this error message: "ImServer Failed to get remote presence: Failed to read protocol version. Reached the end of the file."

Answer/Solution: First, Make sure that your IM server has a static IP address and make sure that there is an "A" record in DNS that resolves to the IP address of the domain name you are using for the IM server.

This error message usually indicates that port 5177 (the port used by Ipswitch IM) is not open or port 5178 on the client is not open. You may have a router or firewall that is blocking these ports. (If DNS resolves the domain name to an "external" IP address, you will need your firewall or router to allow traffic on ports 5177 and 5178.)

If you are using NAT, (that is, if the clients are using non-routable IP Addresses, typically 192.168.x.x or 10.10.x.x) then each client needs to set the following registry key. Back up the registry before making any changes. Then, run regedit and go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Ipswitch\Messenger\Version 1.0\Settings

the Value "Client Uses NAT" must be set to (integer value) "1". Then stop and restart the client.

(If just the server is behind the NAT, and not the clients, then the clients will not need to change their registry.)

If your Server or your Client machines are using Windows XP, make sure that you disable the firewall that is automatically enabled when a network connection is installed on XP. Most likely, the XP firewall is blocking the connection.

If none of the above works, you can try the NAT setting on the client machines, even if you are not using NAT.

Yes, they are.  It all works fine for days, then suddenly this error occurs.  Thread count is in the 20's usually.

verify if the client version is the same the server version.
