There are plenty of reasons. Logging, resolving addresses, applying
application-level access control, application-level virtual hosting, to
name but a few. 

But ignoring this, there are platforms on which IPv4-mapped addresses
will never work. So far it looks like there is a serious consolidation
towards there being no platforms on which both IPv4-only and IPv6-only
sockets won't work.
