Hi Rahim,

My answer is more related to the security part of the question you
asked. Though it may be a bit off what you are asking about, I thought
it would be helpful.

With the various attacks on MD5(and SHA-1) that have been documented,
in my view having the checksum as part of the packet which is MD5
hashed, in my view helps make the known attacks on MD5 even harder (if
you want details I can get to you in another mail).
