Hello everybody,

like perhaps already known, the Linux kernel 2.4.0 final is now released.
This kernel supports native IPv6 packet filtering via so called "netfilter6".

Because of the netfilter6 code is still between alpha and beta state, a
member of the core netfilter developer team, Harald Welte
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, is
looking for persons who are running tests on IPv6 under following scenario:

- kernel: linux 2.4.0 final
- netfilter CVS patches (patch-o-matic): ipv6-fixes, REJECT.ipv6

Information and source of netfilter:
http://netfilter.kernelnotes.org/

You will find the kernel sources at:
http://www.kernel.org/mirrors/

Currently missing (and therefore only for non-IPv6 newbies) in netfilter6:

Logging capability, but Harald is working on ULOG and will hopefully soon
port it to IPv6.

* Please run tests only if you are familiar with netfilter for IPv4

* Please contact Harald directly regarding detected bugs in netfilter6 code.

* Please *do not* contact him regarding how to use netfilter in common (read
howtos and documentation instead and contact the netfilter-user maillist
afterwards, if you still have unsolved problems).

For developers with a part of free time: there are still some missing
features and therefore programmers wanted for:
* porting the IPv4 netfilter kernel log module to IPv6
* owner match (similar to the existing IPv4)
* mac address match
* hoplimit match

If you feel able to to that, please contact Harald for details.

In my opinion it would be a good idea to drive IPv6 portfiltering forward
as fast as possible to well function and mostly full capability work,
because it's a mandatory feature to protect hosts against unwanted (can
happen...) IPv6 traffic.

        Peter
