It would be a nice to have. The patches as written have multiple issues which render them unsuitable for inclusion, but the more important issue is that they don't address HTTPS at all and will result in incorrect behaviour when using an HTTPS URI.

I've just pushed a rewritten HTTP core which adds a separate notion of an HTTP connection, which is now used to implement HTTP connection pools. This would be a good point at which to think about adding HTTP(S) proxy support.
