Patrick: KKOL is not on Vashon Island. They are on land leased from the Port of Tacoma. I believe the site is a couple of miles east and slightly north of KHHO. The stations on Vashon are, AFAIK, 1000, 820/950, and 770/1090. I'm not sure about 710--but probably them too. 880 is not on Vashon. As was demonstrated by 950's original 50-kW site (diplex with 850), Tacoma is not a particularly good location for AMs licensed to Seattle--even if they run 50 kW. The path is pretty long and enough of it is over land with poor conductivity (as opposed to salt water) that the signal in Seattle is not huge. Being so high on the dial doesn't help either. However KKOL was stuck. You can read all about it in their application for the new 50-kW operation at CDBS. Despite the higher power, the new site does not provide a coverage improvement compared with the old two-tower site in the Port of Seattle, and the 50-kW signal in downtown Seattle must be noticeably weaker than the old 5-kW signal. Further evidence of the difficulty of finding an acceptable AM site in the Seattle area is the time KKOL spent (must have been at least three years) on the ship while they obtained all of the necessary permits after they had settled on the Tacoma site. And then, for anyone who thinks the Pacific Northwest is tower-friendly country, there's the KRKO saga ;>(
-- Dan Strassberg, [EMAIL PROTECTED] eFax 707-215-6367 -----Original message----- Dan, Thanks. 159 degrees would put a null towards The Dalles OR (1300-KACI) and 260 would put a null towards Aberdeen (1320-KXRO). Then at about 230 degrees (my direction), they probably put little signal also I would guess. If they protect 1320 KXRO, I presume they will protect 1280 Tumwater WA too. 1290 would not be much of an issue, with Portland gone, and Port Angeles going, but their 1300 KACI null would also protect KUMA 1290 Pendleton OR. 1310 Newport OR would be far enough not to be an issue, as Newport is over 100 air miles down the coast from me and I am over 100 miles from Vashion Island too. . But having their site on Vashion Island, they can easily pipe their signal North to cover most of the Puget Sound area. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager _______________________________________________ IRCA mailing list [email protected] http://arizona.hard-core-dx.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: [email protected]
