Pat and the group: Just a tad bit of trivia -- about the AM sites and stations
on Vashon Island. KJR - 950 started out on 1000 Khz. Fishers Blend (Flour
Mill Company) -- now known as Fisher Broadcasting owned both KJR on 1000 and
KOMO on 950. They sold of KJR after moving KOMO over to 1000 -- and KJR over
to 950 from 1000. Now -- after over 50 years later -- they are now both
located on the same Island. Fishers Blend was forced to sell off KJR by the
Federal Anti-trust laws and FCC rules. Fisher Broadcasting now owns KVI --
which is just "down the block and around the corner". To bad that Fishers
Blend could not have kept BOTH -- KOMO and KJR. And if you have ever worked at
KOMO -- you would know that most of the "oldtimers" still had a dis-like for
"FM". KOMO "turned in" one of the very first FM station permits -- because
"no one would ever listen to FM". For about 40 years or more -- Vashon was
home to the big 3 -- 50 KW AM stations, KIRO 710, KOMO
1000, and KPTK (KING AM) 1090 and KVI on 570 -- first licensed to Tacoma.
KVI has a .25 wave 450 foot tower. A 5/8ths wave tower for 1360 is about 453
feet. Could 1360 be the NEXT to relocate to Vashon ??? The two new comers
to Vashon: 770 KTTH started out as a 250 watter as KXA -- one of the real
oldtimers and KGNW was a 500 watt Daytimer back in 1975 when it first went "on
the air" as KQIN - Burien. The wife of the owner and builder of KQIN -- liked
to knit and weeve "Dog hair" into winter sweaters and blankets. You can't
find that bit of trivia in most radio books. LOL LOL Mike
