James:

I have 5 outside antennas and just 2 coax lines in to the house. All
switching is done outside via coax relays I found on eBay. Each antenna
feeds an impedance transformer first, so all switching, as Nick suggests, is
done at 50 ohms. Each relay has 4 male BNC connections which could allow me
to ground the antenna not in use if I wanted to, but I haven't found this to
be necessary. Beside my phaser I have a small panel with switches and
indicator LEDs which allows me to switch between antennas and to know which
2 are in use at all times. There's also a small power supply which supplies
the 26vdc for the relays, and the 5vdc for the LEDs. Quite complex and not
easy to install, but works very well considering one antenna is about 200'
from my shack. And the best part, switching between antennas is achieved by
just flicking a simple on/off switch and is virtually instantaneous. With
recent temperatures going down around 25 below at night, switching the
relays hasn't been a problem.
