FYI, the frequency used was authorized for use by the military. While nobody has rights to a particular frequency, the various users must stay within the confines of the bands allocated for their particular service.
In this particular case, the garage opener manufacturer took the chance that this military frequency was not being used and it caught up with him. The article gave the impression that it was the military who poached the frequency, however, I have it from a high-ranking officer acquaintance in the area that such was not the case.
