KCKK 1600-AM becomes a sports fan's playland at the first of year but its
"Classic Country" format survives.
KCKK goes all sports under new call letters KEPN on Jan. 1 but its country
oldies are already on KCUV 1510-AM, thanks to a rare bit of cooperation between
managements.
KCUV was drifting along with an oldies-rock format but, said Tim Brown, CEO of
NRC Broadcasting, when the country format became available, he jumped at it. A
quick call to Bob Call, general manager for Lincoln Financial Media, KCKK's
owner, netted not only the format but the call letters.
The sports network ESPN is moving to KCKK (from first on the dial) after
parting ways with KLZ 560-AM, which becomes a Sporting News Radio outlet Jan. 1.
KCKK 1510-AM officially becomes airborne on Tuesday. Management says Jerry
Mills' bluegrass show will survive the move to KCUV (8-10 a.m. Sundays). Two
other Denver stations, KYGO 98.5-FM and KWLI 92.5-FM, play a more contemporary
style of country.
