Steve, Unaided, the Pogo's DX may surprise you. While no R8, I have a Walkman that occasionally surprises me, even unaided, when I walk Radio dog during grey line in the a.m. A well-known trick among loop antenna owners is proximity coupling the loop stick antenna of a radio via magnetic effect with an MW tunable loop antenna. A simple boosting device is a 4" solid wire solenoid rigged to a random length wire and variable air capacitor. The antenna coil of my xtl radio, made of 30x of 660/46 Litz on a 4" styrene plumbing coupler, rigged a la' Tuggle front end (double ganged air variable, one gang tunes ground, the other gang tunes the coil and antenna) radiates enough tuned RF to boost performance of my Sony 2010 and DX 398 from more than several feet away.
