KDON brings back not-so-fond memories for this old coot. I did my basic
training with the 2nd Inf Div at Fort Ord, Calif., down the road from Salinas
in the summer of 1956, and the night DJ show at KDON on 1460 provided the music
all 50 of us in my platoon had to listen to. Rock, mostly bubble gum variety,
was just getting started, and the song that seemed to be played almost every
hour was "Transfusion" by Nervous Norvous. There also was that dratted novelty
record that made sound bites out of various rock hits of the day, in satirical
newscast form .. and my "buddies" in the platoon took to calling me "John
Cameron-Cameron" as a result of that overworked treasure.
