Very correct Charlie. DC interties are also very common in Japan where the western half of the country is mostly 60 hz AC while the eastern half is mostly 50 hz AC. Direct AC interties would be impossible. DC interties are also useful for long submarine runs where AC is plagued by high capacitance resulting in high loss and phase shifts. The 115 km England-Isle of Man submarine intertie is an exception. It is AC with a capacity of 40 mw at 90 kv. The England-France submarine intertie is DC with a capacity of 2,000 mw. And the proposed 750 km Norway-UK submarine intertie was to have a capacity of 1,200 mw. Vancouver Island has two submarine high voltage DC interties. One has been in operation since 1968 and has a capacity of 312 mw at 260 kv. The other went into operation in 1977 with 370 mw at 280 kv.
By the way, every resource that I've seen indicates that Cuba uses a 60 hz distribution system - not the 50 hz that I have seen mentioned here on numerous occasions in relation to the warbler. Even the WRTH lists Cuba as 60 hz.
