Actually and/or in fact, in Arabic, "Q" represents a sound which most of us
might call "a
strangled k." It is a "k" sound pronounced deep in the throat, rather than
the "k" sound
which we use in EE, SS, PP, FF and Kentuckian. Arabic has a reg'lar "k"
sound, too.
Tagalog ("Filipino") of the area north of Manila has a similar sound. Jest
happened that
way.
I could pronounce it easily, having practiced. One of my colleagues at VOA,
a Kuwaiti by
birth and immigrated to the US (married a Carolina gal, got along thick
with her brothers,
and could redneck purty well) accused me of being a MOSSAD agent. For fun.
Cain't pronounce nothin' now. Well, I can, but it's hardly intelligible.
