Dennis, Nothing strange about it. The two stations' frequencies are being "mixed" somewhere, probably at the stations. You got the math right. Probably are putting out a mixing product on 460 kHz, too. Upon reading your experience, immediately I thought your car radio was at fault. Car AM radios are for poop in many cars, nowadays. But if you heard the spur 18 miles away, that direction any suspicion away from your radio.
