Powell, The fiqure I have heard from engineers that have IBOC AM stations that they can use up to 10%. I wish they would use 1%. With 1%, I don't think the hash would be near the issue. A 5KW station would be using just 50 watts of IBOC power, but at 500 watts, it is an issue. Then a 50 KWer at 5KW of IBOC. Like in the case of KFBK now cases quite a bit of hash. I can narrow the bandwidth and move 1540 over to 1538 or 39 and get rid of a lot of it, but I still get it. KFBK has been 24 hours in IBOC mode the past several days.
