The thing that frightens me the most in a "minor" emergency is how people react to it in the first place. Here in St. Louis in the past couple of years have had some close calls (major wind storm knocked out power to "basically" the entire metro area followed by a severe winter storm 6months later and a tornado scare another 6months after that).
1. Wind Storm: Knocked out my power for 4 days compared to 2 weeks for some. This one came without much warning and that was the wake up call for me. Huge sycamore, oaks and other large trees snapped like toothpicks all over the area falling on houses (like mine)and power lines causing mass confusion. Emergency services had and still have nothing when it comes to interops, even knocked out power to some city emergency communication centers. Tensions ran high and civilians even began threatening the linesmen when they arrived to fix the lines. 2. Ice/Winter Storm: This one came with 4 or five day notice. Once again most did not heed the warning and sat powerless and heatless for days. Most waited until after the storm hit to obtain supplies. 3. Tornado: Tornado watch for most of the afternoon and when one finally touched down (F1 I believe) in the middle of the city most ignored it like it was a strong storm and others did not even know it had happened; even the next day when a story ran about it in the newspaper. NIMBY. Not in my backyard, it won't/can't happen to me, etc. This is how the majority of the population thinks. "IT'S WHEN IT HAPPENS, not if it happens." I signed up for "CERT" emergency training. After the New Madrid decides to wake up, most of St. Louis will be cut off from the rest of the region because of all the old and unreliable bridges (MO river to the north, MS river to the east, and the Meramec River to the west and south eventually connecting to the Missisippi) and I'm not going to mention "WHEN" the lock and dams fail all along MO/MS rivers. All major interstate highways/major roads, train traffic, and river traffic will come to a complete stop. Most people do not have a weather radio not to speak of emergency radio and emergency plan for the family. "We don't have to worry though, the Federal government will help us." Where were they for the poor people of New Orleans? Most of the population suffers from the following: laziness and ignorance. I'm pretty sure that many of us in this newsgroup are prepared for "minor" emergencies, but how would any of us (including me) make out if we did have to fend for our own for 2 or 3 weeks? My pitiful little suggestion, "take a lesson from the Swiss;" SELF RELIANCE. That's my 2 bits. 73, Woz StLDX -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, September 24, 2007 8:04 AM To: [email protected] Subject: IRCA Digest, Vol 41, Issue 182 Send IRCA mailing list submissions to [email protected] To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can reach the person managing the list at [EMAIL PROTECTED] When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of IRCA digest..." I ran off a copy of KGA's proposed pattern. I was surprised to see they are still going to put a lot of signal to the SW, in the direction of the Bay area. I expected a tighter null and more signal directed North towards Spokane. Tonight earlier I was getting KGA at S9+55DB on peaks, often the strongest thing on the dial. This is off the Eastern beverage. The strongest local, KAST is S9+38 DB!. I just checked and KGA is still peaking S9+45 DB, probably due to the high A &K index, being down a bit, if you can call it that KGA is to the NE. But with the proposed change to 15 KW and the pattern is not that different than it is now, as there is still a lot of power to the SW, I see the S Meter peaking at S9+30 or 35 DB, mybe more, so it will still hog the channel here. A bit of a disappointment. 73, Patrick Patrick Martin KAVT Reception Manager ------------------------------ Message: 2 Date: Mon, 24 Sep 2007 01:44:56 -0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Patrick Martin) Subject: Re: [IRCA] TPs for 09-23-07 To: [email protected] (Mailing list for the International Radio Club of America) Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Walt, Glad you guys had some fantastic DX there. Partial set of White's logs. Pop'Comm near complete from > 1983-present...etc, etc. I have been collecting this stuff most of my life. aLL 21 YEARS OF IT. AMATEUR RADIO I have all QST's from 1936 to 2000. Before 1936 I have some from the 20's but they are not complete. I have ARRL Radio Amateur Handbooks from 1930 to 2000; Though not complete before 1950. The 1930 issue was given to me by my high school english teacher. POPULAR ELECTRONIS and ELECTRONIC ILLUSRATED My collection begins with the December 1954 issue. Yes, I bought it in 1954. For years I keep all the issues till I joined the navy, (1960) mom thought I would never need such items again and dumped alot of it. But have most from 65 to 73. RADIO BOOKS I have studied the history of television, and have books from the 20's, 30's and 40's about the working and building and repair of radio and TV's. I learned radio from a book "Radio Physics Course" @1933. Still have the book. WRTH I had, at one time, WRTH from the 60's up to 2000. At one house we were renting, the storage roof leaked, and I lost most of the WRTH's before 1980. By the time I had discovered the mess, they were covered with mold. They now reside in the Cleveland, TN land fill. Plus tons of other radio stuff that I would like to sale or trade for. The first of these is currently available as a podcast at www.rnzi.com (Other Audio/Mailbox) and is a rare recording of the 1963 Top 20 radio show from 2ZC Hawkes Bay in New Zealand. The documentary comes complete with music, station IDs for 2ZC, local adverts and typical sound effects of the period. The documentary is linked with the article 'From Hawkes Bay to Replay' at the Radio Heritage Foundation website www.radioheritage.net which contains photos of the DJ and the panel operator and a personal story behind the scenes of the 2ZC Top 20 show. On Monday, October 1 2007, RNZI broadcasts a second documentary featuring the history of Pacific radio during the 1941-1950 period. This covers the broadcasting scene around the region during WWII, the occupation of Japan, and the reconstruction period for SE Asia, the Philippines and other locations. The documentary includes classic Pacific music melodies of the period, and also covers new stations in Samoa, Fiji and other colonies of the time, as well as reviewing broadcasting from Australia and NZ during wartime censorship. After broadcast during the Mailbox program on RNZI, this documentary is also available via podcast at www.rnzi.com. The Radio Heritage Foundation is a non-profit charitable trust. Hundreds of pages of articles about Pacific radio and searchable Pacific radio databases are available for free at www.radioheritage.net. Due to both WJR and WWJ running 24/7 IBOC, I've completely lost 4 adjacent channels (750, 770, 940, & 960). Partial damage includes WLW & WFDF (a local Disney outlet) but with a little effort using SSB or off channel tuning, I can still hear 690, 710, 900 & 920. I don't like the loss of 750 & 770 in particular as I have some very good DX catches in the past, but at least I'll still be able to DX.
