Something I was thinking about earlier... I did lots of DXing (MW and SW) in the seventies with some, I thought, pretty good antennas - I did not hear half as much stuff then as I do now. And yes, I was using a DX150B (slightly Hall-Patched) with some 300 foot LW and random wire antennas -- and a small passive loop. So - have things improved or is it all the sophisticated receivers and antennas that I am using now? Or maybe I am just listening more... In fact, when I was a teenager, it took ONE GREAT BIG EFFORT to get me out of bed prior to sunrise. I mean, it was just not done.
