After shopping around a fair bit and comparing services, I've elected to send
the defective HD to a disk recovery service in Vancouver. It appears that many
(?most) services are Chinese...at least that's the case in Canada.
The outfit I chose has offices in China and a number of cities around the
world. The prices were far better than what's available here in Victoria.
Looks like my 500 GB HD will run around $900 to recover the data. They
have about a 90% success rate. At the same time I'm sending over a dead 120 GB
HD that my son had with him on his Singapore to Gdansk sailing trip this year
which contained all of his digital photos. That one runs
$500. Since I considered both HDs to contain "once in a lifetime" stuff, I bit
the bullet and took the plunge. Chuck, I tried everything to have Windows
recognize the drive, but no luck whatsoever. Wanda is going over
to Vancouver tomorrow with a girlfriend, and has agreed to drop it off, along
with a new 500 GB HD to transfer the data to. It'll take around a week to do,
Lord willing! I'll report back on how things have gone next
week, and if I'm lucky (it's time for my luck to improve, I suspect), I'll
finally be able to transfer those great .wav files to Chuck's HD, which I'll
then be able to send back your way......Fingers crossed!!!! ..........Walt.
