Hi all and Happy Holidays from Vic,BC ,My honest first impression and opinion
on the Sony SRF 37: I tested the Sony 37 and found it to be a good sounding
little machine with its headphones on FM and AM is not bad either and is
slightly better than the 59's audio. Reception on AM is good in sensitivity but
selectivity is not as good as I expected. All distant signals are reasonable
for both but the two 10KW locals are audible on at least 5 freqs up and down
with interruptions from signals nearby at ground level and spread even wider at
higher levels with fewer obstructions or line of sight reception with
towers, which are only 3 to 4 km away. On FM It is getting strong signals from
the more powerful locals covering the weaker locals and out of towners across
most of the band at the top floor level of my apt bldg and is not as good as
the 59's clean reception in the same place.Ground level FM is closer to
normal.TV pickup is good at higher level but not good on the ground
without strong local stations on VHF. Comparing the 37 to the 59 I would
choose to DX with the analog radio and use the digital one for general
listening and maybe to music on FM since it sounds better than the 59.The 37's
single AAA will quickly become too weak to run the digital circuits and the
radio will shut itself down before the cell is dead like a camera, while the AA
in the 59 will run down more slowly before the radio dies. The 37 does not
convert from 10 to 9 Khz since I don't see a switch to change it.Both radios
are available at London Drugs in Victoria for $50 (the 37) and $35 (the 59) I'm
not buying one of each for comparison to see if there's a difference.I'll live
with what these radios can do as is.My thanks to Gary DeBock for sending me
these two little Boy's toys just in time for Christmas 2007. A happy new DXing
year to all Sony DXers from Bill in Vic,BC
