Dennis, Have you taken a look at Whamlog or another station list by freq. and determined if there are any western topbanders that you could null and try to nail more eastern stations? With the dearth of stations on top band that seems like a good strategy to spend a lot of time up there. Sounds like you may be doing this already. Last winter during the One Active Device contest, I used my one tube superhet to nab 1640 KDIA in the Bay Area of California. While I couldn't null WTNI Gulfport MS with my rig, I got lucky when it was off the air late at night.
