Hello All,
The box containing the new C.Crane SWP radio loudly proclaims "Best AM
Reception of Any Radio This Size." Well, that's certainly an interesting
claim, considering the ultra-hot Ultralight competition these days.
Obviously much different in weight and capabilities than the other
Ultralight DX machines we have tested recently, the C.Crane SWP looks
something
like a shrunken ICF-2010, with a keypad under the digital display on the right
side. Weighing about the same as three SRF-59's (the manual doesn't like to
specify the weight, which is understandable), the radio not only has AM and
FM-stereo reception, but also SW coverage in two bands: 2.3-7.5 MHz, and
9.2-22.0 mHz. With an attractively styled black case and at 4.75 x 3 x 1.2
inches, the radio will fit inside a typical shirt pocket, but the pocket may
have
premature wear (this is an ultra-heavy Ultralight).
The radio tunes in 1 kHz steps on the AM band, a unique capability
among the "Ultralight" contenders, and might even raise your hopes of
selectivity
similar to the ICF-2010 it resembles.. but alas, not every DXer's hope comes
true (except maybe in the SRF-59). As far as the radio's daytime DX
performance, let's just say that my review unit has kicked off a scramble to
determine whether the performance of my radio is typical of the design, or
whether
the 2008 Ultralight AM-DX Shootout will face another turkey-replacement delay.
In the interim, for those of you considering purchase of this unit, may I
suggest you hold on to your hard-earned money temporarily, until the
Ultralight Support Group determines whether my review unit is an unfortunate
aberration, or whether C.Crane should be guilty of perjury for their
advertising
claims.
73 and Best Wishes,
Gary DeBock
