This was not what I would consider a good weekend at Jordan River.

That said, the Eton E1 with 5 Meter loop on the ALA100M performed well
on all fronts.

Some comparisons:

While 530Khz had an assortment of TIS stations and T&C Islands later in
the evening (on the Eton E1), none of the hand-held ULR's yielded any audio.

Tahiti made a good appearance on 738 on the Eton E1 on Friday night yielding
good audio and intelligible French dialogue - while on the ULR's, nothing but
a het on KCBS 740khz.

Saturday morning produced some good sunrise enhancements on 1566khz Korea
and 1575 Thailand on the Eton E1 -- I may have had a brief snippet
of intelligence on 1566khz on the SRF-M37... maybe, just maybe...
with nothing on the other two ULR's

I think with the addition of a 3 or 6' passive loop that the ULR's
would have sprung to life.
I agree with the previous poster (from Grayland) that an "S9" TP on
any other DX Receiver (with suitable antenna) should yield some
audio on the ULR's barefoot.

Funny aside: (OK, not so funny at the time...) - The cabin we stay at has broad
ocean views and a private
hot-tub on the patio... and a beautiful wood-burning stove in the living
area... 2 floors and 17' floor to
ceiling front windows facing the sea - the ultimate DX location of course.
At night I was loading up the stove to burn for 3 or 4 hours after we went to
bed but
set the thermostat to kick in the electric perimeter heaters when the cabin
temp dropped
much below 20 degrees (C).
Unfortunately, I left one of my lined canvas "Courier" bags (I call them Jack
Bauer bags because
there is plenty of room and extra pockets in them for tools, wire, cables,
adapters, connectors etc...)
up against one of the wall space heaters. The bag happened to be holding my
trusty Sony Mini-Disc
recorder in a kevlar lined pouch. So. Sure enough I reach for it this morning
in the dim light
while starting the morning fire. The bag is hot and the inside pouch holding
the Sony MiniDisc is
hotter still. Much to my horror (as I pull out the Sony MD), the MD's LCD
display is completely blackened...
the unit is almost too hot to hold on to. I quickly open it up and pull out the
Lithium battery -- it
too is very hot. After sighing a couple of times, I cross my fingers and say a
quiet prayer to the
God of the Ionosphere and place the steaming MD Recorder near a cool window.
I continue my DX session for about 1/2 hour and then headed back to bed.
When I awoke and checked on the MD recorder, the screen had returned to normal.
Quickly dropping the battery back in and pressing REC revealed that it was
still working.
Lucky me. Dodged a bullet. Next time more careful!

If anyone is interested, the cabin URL is www.pointnopoint.com -
It is a good alternative to Grayland or trips to Tofino
on the West Coast of the Island -- there is oodles of privacy
and a quaint restaurant nearby if you wish to eschew the
more than adequate kitchens that each cabin has.

Cheers,
