Hello All,
While there is no question that Rob Ross gets more DX out of his SRF-59
battery than anyone else, the question of SRF-59 battery run time is kind of
a nebulous concept, because it depends entirely on the audio amplifier's
average volume level, which in turn depends on the hearing level of the
dauntless Ultralight DX operator (rumor has it that not all of us are
teenagers
anymore)..
Anyway, because of multiple SRF-59's, shootouts, alignments (22 so far)
and Ultralight radios scattered all over my Ultrasmall shack, it is not
unusual for me to find an SRF-59 that was accidentally left on for a one week
period, with the volume at a normal listening level (headphones disconnected).
Suddenly realizing that my careless mistake is really just a scientific
experiment in disguise, I always check the used battery's performance against
a
new one in a sibling unit aligned at the same sensitivity level... and there
has never been any noticeable difference. 10 days? Still no difference.
That's about 240 hours, but if I had to try for hot TP-DX with an SRF-59, just
to
be on the safe side, I would pull the "Rob Ross" trick, and put a new AA
Energizer in my SRF-59. Anyway, the combination of headphone-only audio and a
rather sizable battery makes the SRF-59 the Undisputed King of Ultralight
Endurance (kind of like Rob Ross again, eh?).
73, Gary
