Hi all: I just received a used Sony SRF-85 from an eBay auction. It was manufactured in the early-mid 1990's, and it is the SRF-39/49/59 in a sports-friendly skin. As I think some have mentioned before, this is one hot little radio, and fortunately my unit is aligned and ready to go! Comparing it with one of Gary's "King of the Hill" SRF-59s, it is a delightful draw in all performance categories, inclusding sensitivity, selectivity and nulling prowess.
What the SRF-85 has going for it is an automatic volume limiter (useful for joggers), a non-detachable battery cover, and a tuning knob that is mounted on the outside of the casing so it is very accessible. (My tuning knob has a bit of play in it - any else's have this?) The case is a little bit bigger than the SRF-59 - maybe a quarter inch taller. It's also built like a tank! It also has a socket for an arm band, which might be good to use in order to mount this on a tripod. So, if you see one lying around or in a second-hand store, don't hesitate!
