It is an interesting question and one that comes up quite often.  From many 
south facing beaches here on Cape Cod, RVC-530 Turks & Caicos can be heard at 
high noon - at a distance of about 1,380 miles.    Does the signal arrive 
entirely via groundwave or is it a combination of groundwave and daytime 
skywave?  Good question.   As someone mentioned, the late Gordon Nelson 
conducted scientific research on this subject  in the late 1960's.  Some of his 
results were published in DX News in an article titled "Skywave or Groundwave 
Reception?" I believe this article is still available from the NRC.
