Jeff, I have both but haven't done a side-by-side yet. I will try to do that sometime this week or next weekend. The display light is nice (note it is momentary). The thing I do not like about the VX is that you have to either be in Pre-Set mode or Normal Tuning. As you know, the V has a dedicated button for pre-sets and you use the up/down buttons for normal tuning.
In the VX, you have to decide whether you are in Normal Tuning or Pre-Set mode. If you are in Pre-Set mode, the up/down buttons take you through your memories. A VX advantage....you can go backwards and forwards with memories. I wish they had just added the backlight and clock to the V and left it alone. Someone else may pipe in on this (may have already), but I can't figure out how to get the backlight on without doing something (going up/down), etc. A dedicated momentary light button would have been nice. You can do 9 MHz tuning with the VX and this is not possible with the V. The backlight is nice and bright and numerals larger...easy to read. They should have replaced TV audio with Weather channels. I wish these radio manufacturers would consult with me before they release a new model !!! To save a little $$$, sometimes C Crane has what you are looking for in the Orphan category.
