Sorry too to hear about your experience, Patrick. As a physician, of course we
deal with death on a very frequent basis, and spend some of our time
pronouncing someone as deceased. When I was a young doctor, I found this
particularly hard when the RCMP, or Military Police, or coroner would call me
to a scene. For some strange reason, they seemed to enjoy sending me into a
homicide or suicide or drowning unattended...often at night or in bad
weather. I never new what I would see, and I was always glad to exit the
scene. Even today, going to a seniors residence to pronounce, which still
occasionally occurs is not my happiest moment, especially when the family is
there.
Of course, what you witnessed is far more difficult, as a friend/family member
only just discovers the deceased. In my case, the family is already informed,
and the nursing staff has usually prepared the body somewhat for them.
Still, never easy. For me, thankfully, usually an RN can pronounce and I just
have to issue the medical certificate of death. Hang in there, Patrick. Your
work is very important! .......Walt.
