Gh = P in hiccough
ough = O in though
phth = T in phthysic
eigh = A in neighbor or weigh
pt = T in ptomaine
eau = O in plateau.

I learned that in sixth grade when we were discussing how hard the English 
language is for non English speakers to learn.
