Here's an interesting link to the subject.  Captain Duffy of the US Merchant
Marines was captured by the German's and turned over to the Japanese for
slave labor during his imprisonment.  The link has his story relating to the
SWL listeners who notified his parents of capture.

reading, especially relating to one of his shipmates who was imprisoned near
Nagasaki but survived the blast.

My uncle's captivity in New Guinea was announced by the Japanese and the
news was heard by several SWLer's.  He was taken alive because the broadcast
contained my grandparents' new address which our war department had yet to
receive.   Shortly after captured he was executed with the rest of his air
crew.
