Wow,
It was even better than two days ago and much more akin to Steve's
loggings than Dennis'. Strange how 50 or 100 miles, or even 15 can
make substantial differences in what was heard from more than 1/3
the way 'round the globe.
I was up early, tuning in first 45 minutes before dawn. There were
already a dozen DU audios, though all were in the 6 or 6+ category.
For once, early promises on the band paid off at max dawn. Things
were pretty much like that, a lot of 6s, until 1200, 15 minutes
before dawn. Then things heated up with many more 6s and a few 7s on
the dial. Once again, 675 and especially 612 were the stars of the
show. 675, Christchurch managed a legitimate 8 at 1214... more or
less dawn; 612 sustained an 8 for a loooong time. I listened to 612
from about 1212 until 1245, a full 30 minutes after dawn (!!!) It was
a legit 8 from when I noted it at 1212 until after 1225, holding at a
7 past 1230, still a very strong 6 at 1236, dipped slightly, but
rebuilt to a 7+ at 1240, finally losing audio and then the carrier in
quick succession at 1245. Although this kind of post-dawn behavior is
common at the coast and I note it on some good Fall mornings to Asia
(I have a pretty good water path that direction) I don't think that
I've ever heard DU audio sustained so long from here on Orcas. My
path to DU is about 80% land for the first 60 miles or so. By the
way, the other audios on the band were all gone by 1225.
Well, here is a summary of the notes. The level is 6 or 6+, just
beneath language recognition, unless otherwise noted, the
perintheticals are the most likely stations):
531 (3 East Coast Aussies)
558 (Aussie, NZ, Fiji???)
567 DU Audio 1143 (Nat. Radio, Wellington)
576 DU Audio at 1205 (2RN, Sydney)
585 (7RN, Hobart?)
612 6+ starting at 1157, 8 from 1207 until after 1225. Gone at 1245.
Nice feature on latest Mars Lander (4QR, Brisbane)
675 First noted audio @ 1135; built to 8 @ 1214 dawn (Nat. Radio Christchurch)
702 (2BL Sydney)
738 Carrier built to an "8" peak around 1200, but VERY under
modulated (Radio Tahiti)
747 DU Audio 1208 (4QS or Hobart)
756 Nat. Radio Auckland//675
765 (5CC, Port Lincoln or 2EC, Bega)
774 (3LO Melbourne)
855 DU Audio (4QB, Pialba?)
864 (ZB, Invercargill???)
891 Horseracing call (4TAB) at 1203
918 Almost a 6 at 1204 (N. Radio NZ Synchro?)
963 6+ at 1216 (S. Star, Christchurch)
1116 7@ 1211 (4BC, Brisbane)
I tried for 612 with my best Ultralight and the huge antenna. No
luck... too much overload. Gotta get the attenuator built. Horse and
barn door, etc.
