102.3 - KJLH - Compton, CA started out as KFOX-FM in Long Beach. The 6 bay --
Clover leaf antenna - was mounted to one of the two 150 foot metal towers at
220 E. Anahiem - in Long Beach -- which was then the Studio / Office location.
The two towers were industial type - with 4 legs mounted on top of a large 2
and a half story building that was once used to support the 1280 AM longwire
antenna. In early 1964, KFOX bought KGLA 100.3 in Los Angeles, moved the
KFOX-FM calls over to 100.3 and sold 102.3 to John Lemar Hill. The 102.3
became KJLH and the transmitter remained on top of the old KFOX tower until
102.3 was moved to serve Compton KJLH had it's first independent studios just
around the corner at 1014 Pine St, above a doctors office. The transmitter
site was moved to the Dominguez Water Tower -- northeast of Long Beach and just
south of Compton. This was the first of two FM's to change "COL" from Long
Beach. Later KLFM, now KBUE 105.5 would also relocate to
the Dominguez WT site -- which is owned by the city of Long Beach (LOL).
KNOB, 97.9 would later move to serve East Los Angeles. KJLH was sold to
Stevie Wonder who came up with the new Kindness, Joy and Hope.
