The format change is confirmed. KKOL was noted with Bloomberg News
today and yesterday. And improved coverage is definitely needed in
areas north and east of Seattle. I had another station (KAPL, I think)
wiping them out on the car radio as I left work in downtown Redmond at
4:30 this afternoon.
I'm not surprised by the format change. The old format was at best a
VERY distant #3 in the battle with the market's other two conservative
talkers, KVI and KTTH. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing KKOL listed
in the quarterly Arbitron listings. Given the lack of listeners and the
station's coverage challenges, it only made sense for them to find a
niche format.

KKOL-1300 has applied for an STA: 2500w-D on co-channel 1300 in Seattle.
This location (47-47-33n 122-07-26w) is about halfway between Everett and
Bellevue and is NNE of downtown. I don't have a feel for how their basic
signal is up there during the day but did notice some sky/groundwave
cancellation at night on Lakeside Dr. when my son lived up there. No doubt
this application is predicated on their current predicament of having to
operate with 25kw days from their Tacoma tideflats site because of some
problems with cranes at the adjacent Port of Tacoma. I would think that this
would result in some distortion from say the airport into town on I-5.
However, it says it is an STA so perhaps they are looking toward resolving
the crane problem and going back to 50kw. However, if they are going to go
to the trouble to build this, it certainly doesn't look like they are
counting on resolving it short term.
