Mandarin is Standard Chinese and Cantonese the regional language. To my ears
Mandarin sounds, well, pure Chinese while Cantonese has a flavor of
Vietnamese in its sound.

Hi Kevin,
I'd be glad to send you some DX clips (MP3) of MW stations in different
Asian languages if you like. I have some loud and clear recordings in
Chinese, Korean, and Japanese that can help you get accustomed to the
language differences.
On this topic, I need to some day be able to tell the difference between
Standard Chinese (Cantonese?) and Mandarin. I've heard about these flavors
but haven't a clue as to how they differ.
Contact me offline if you'd like a few MP3s, Kevin.

Hi Dennis/all:
<SNIP> To better figure
out what I am hearing next time I get to the beach, I have vowed to
better
orient myself to the differences in Asian languages, although I have
audio
recordings of all sessions so at least I can go back home and figure out
what I heard.
