First of all, congratulations to Deane for the UL loggings in Calgary. These
conditions are amazing, but even so, that's a very northerly path covering a
lot of land.

And, as for conditions, this was a "rabbit in the headlights" morning, so many
unIDs, so little time, and not enough parallels. On top of that, even with
the many signals, the directional antennas didn't seem to be rejecting domestic
splatter as well as usual, so there was a general feeling of fighting with a
firehose.

I've had some time off work to compensate for the seven day weeks worked on the
last field trip, so listened from 1330 to 1500 with no qualms. Again, things
got very lively just after 1400, but were not bad beforehand either. The
liveliness lasted until after 1430, with the bulk of signals gone by 1450,
though the big guns kept popping up (still some audio on 1287 and 1575 at
1600UT as well). Perhaps not as strong overall as yesterday, but still pretty
astonishing.

As an aside, the EE lessons today on NHK2 discussed shoplifting in Japan; not a
happy topic for a country where it used to be unknown.

pretty darn good audio (at least briefly, though mostly pretty steady):

279 R. Rossii at 1348
567 JOIK //594
594 JOAK
603 vocal mx not //CNR1 or 2, or 6085 (looking for Taiwan); followed by CC
talk; has anyone ID'd this yet?
639 CNR-1 later on //5030; not as strong as yesterday but still very good
747 JOIB later
774 JOUB
828 JOBB
837 presumed Harbin with CC talk briefly at good level, but almost always there
936 EE nx 1407; presumed Anhui
963 CRI presumed w/oriental instrumental mx at 1357
972 HLCA later
981 CNR-1 //5030, but still a lot of splatter in spite of this one's raw
strength
1053 jammer 1356UT

reasonable audio at times during the period (though often battling w/splash
or noise):

531 JOQG //594
558 mostly not Korea, though occasionally could use as // for 603; presumed
JOCR dominant
594 a mess, at least three signals in JOAK fade down
621 unID CC generally dominant except on the hour...
657 N. Korea in hum
711 HLKA
873 JOGB //774, no hum on channel?
954 JOKR
1008 unID mx
1134 Korea //972
1143 Taiwan Fisheries //738 at 1451UT
1161 oriental mx 1349, down on the hour; likely Taiwan
1206 KK talk and hum
1287 JOHR
1377 CNR1
1557 WYFR's slow voiced man got to this by 1439UT
1575 VoA, no Farda on various checks

not so reasonable audio, occasional words in splash or noise:

540 NHK1 synchros //594
585 JOPG //594
612 JOLK //594 and something else
693 JOAB//774 in unrelenting CBU splash
774 talk under JOUB, possibly CC?
837 JOQK //594
864 2 stations at least, nothing //1287
882 unID CC talker at 1401
918 echoey CC talk
945 CNR1
1089 likely Chinese, but mx at the time
1152 NHK2 //774 most likely JOPC
1188 not //NHK1, still looking for ID from FEBC
1251 CC talk, big carrier (a lot of carriers, one is ~30Hz high) at 1353, then
vocal pop mx later
1386 NHK2 synchros //828
1566 HLAZ, never made it past this

Burbles in the splatter and noise:

too many to keep track of:

1035, 1224, 576 w/ big carrier and slow instrumental mx at 1430, 1278 etc etc

Strongish het, no audio (either undermodulated or ravaged by splatter):

576 (is RR off the air after 1400? very strong carrier, no audio), 1359 etc

best wishes,

Nick
