How about "5. Was up on the roof in brilliant sunshine and minimal wind putting the westerly Flag and an active whip back up before winter sets in properly" ? You have to grab these occasions when they arrive, as it may literally be months before they occur again. Started DXing before 1300UT this morning, and conditions were quite a bit down on yesterday, so much so I went back to bed for an hour. Not too much better at 1400, but unlike yesterday, there was somewhat of a sunrise enhancement, starting around 1420, but still only enough to push the big guns into the entertainment grade category that they've been occupying on the most pedestrian mornings. The party was pretty much over by 1500. One new station heard in spite of all that grumbling.....a CRI station on 603 with the distinctive chimes and fanfare at 1400UT. The only one listed is on Hainan island in southern China and with a southerly directional pattern to serve southeast Asia. So, either it has a poor directional pattern, or there's something else on the channel that CRI is not admitting to. The signal was mixing with Korea and poor enough that I couldn't tell what language it went into. pretty darn good audio (all of it understandable by a native speaker, at least briefly): 594 JOAK 774 JOUB 828 JOBB 972 HLCA (none of these really moved into this category until after 1420UT; 774 and 828 may have had DU signals underneath) reasonable audio at times during the period (much of it understandable by a native speaker, though often battling w/splash or noise): 279 R. Rossii 531 DU talk at 1407UT instead of the usual NHK-1 which was burbling in there somewhere 567 JOIK //594 576 Mayak w/RR talk at 1435 603 HLSA //558 w/pop mx, but CRI fanfare noted at 1400UT mixing with this 693 JOAB //774; CBU-690 playing quiet piano mx let this through, normally this season, 693 has been buried in 690 splash; we'll see if the "new" westerly Flag helps 702 NHK2 at 1446 //774, might have had N. Korea in background with hum 747 JOIB 936 pop mx and CC talk, best at 1423 and 1455UT, normally weaker though with a strong carrier not so reasonable audio, occasional words or phrases in splash or noise could be understood by a native speaker 153 and 189 R. Rossii 558 HLQH //603 at 1428 612 DU EE at 1440, likely 4QR 666 JOGB //594 at 1420 675 seemed like VV talk at 1444 873 JOGB //774 at 1456 963 CRI w/chimes and fanfare at 1300 Burbles in the splatter and noise (if lucky, language might be guessed at by cadence of talk, or parallel established by changes in talk or music) : lots....particularly later 558 likely JOCR battling with HLQH 585 JOPG //594 at 1457, briefly 621 CC? 639 //5030 so CNR-1 657 w/hum, likely N.
