Hello All, Ultralight radio DXers have a lot to be thankful for on this holiday-- a booming Yahoo enthusiast group of over 450 members around the world, dedicated administrators like John Bryant, Rob Ross and Allen Willie, and new high-gain antennas that make pocket radios competitive in all forms of weak-signal DXing. These are all very positive aspects of our niche hobby, and worthy of gratitude. But perhaps the most exciting development for ULR enthusiasts has been the recent introduction of DSP-enhanced pocket radios, which offer astonishing AM selectivity options previously available only in communications receivers. The early DSP models came with issues like non-selectable filtering and the "soft mute" handicap, but these have all been corrected in the new Tecsun PL-380, an awesome 4-band powerhouse that certainly provides an extreme value for its $45.99 price. Having been fortunate to review every new ULR model for the past two years (a job which requires an open mind, as well as an open wallet), I can honestly say that no other pocket radio has inspired such fascination in its AM-FM-LW-SW performance capability. Being blessed with a few days of spare time, wrapping up a full Tecsun PL-380 review is the top priority here. Judging from the 157 downloads of two PL-380 DSP selectivity demonstration MP3's (on my Media Fire account), there is a huge interest in the breakthrough AM selectivity offered by this new Tecsun model. For those of you that may have missed these dramatic TP-DXing MP3's, they are linked again below. Each recording steps through the PL-380's DSP filtering options, from the widest (6 kHz) to the narrowest (1 kHz). The 648-Voice of Russia recording features severe domestic QRM from 650-KSTE, which the PL-380 handles very well with its 1 kHz selectivity option. During the final 7 seconds, the PL-380 is tuned to 647 kHz, practically eliminating the last splatter from 650-KSTE. The PL-380 is currently the only DSP ultralight that can accomplish this, because of its freedom from the "soft mute" issue. 73 and Happy Thanksgiving to All, Gary DeBock (in Puyallup, WA) 648-Voice of Russia (Chinese service), 1453 UTC 11-10-09 (Tecsun PL-380, assisted by a 9' PVC Loop) _http://www.mediafire.com/?tnwem2fiz1y_ (http://www.mediafire.com/?tnwem2fiz1y) 738-Taiwan Fisheries, 1443 UTC 11-10-09 (Tecsun PL-380, assisted by a 9' PVC Loop) _http://www.mediafire.com/?mnznomi5zwj_ (http://www.mediafire.com/?mnznomi5zwj) _______________________________________________ IRCA mailing list [email protected] http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca
