The "Vulcan" nickname goes far beyond football. Both the station and the team drew their name from the same source - the monumental statue of Vulcan that stands at the foot of Birmingham's Red Mountain.

It's a civic landmark, and one of the tallest statues in the country, and it was placed there to honor Birmingham's importance as a steelmaking center.
