WWV is currently announcing that the geo alert messages will be discontinued as
of September 6. These are the A/K index etc broadcasts that are aired at 18
past the hour on WWV and 45 past on WWVH. The web page
www.spaceweather.gov/wwv has some additonal information, including an e-mail
address for comments and questions.
This move isn't surprising in this day and age, since the same information is
reradily available in the Internet. On the other hand, some of us don't have
internet access during DXpeditions, etc., so the service will be missed by a
few (assuming the go through with it).
Oddly enough, NIST is currently conducting an on-line WWV/WWVH/WWVB user survey
that asks for user opinions about the service, which make the decision seem a
bit premature.
