"Great 58" is WTCM in the fourth edition of the Almanac (which I
discovered on my bookshelf). That was in 1985 however. Better
source is the Slogan List Updater 5.1 in 27 April 1991 DX Monitor
..."Great 58" is KALB in Alexandria, LA (now the calls for a TV station).
And Slogan List Updater 5.2 in April 27 1991 DX Monitor lists
CHLC-580 as "the nation's superstation" (ID in EE).
These were discovered by running a search on IRCA reprint service's
scans of DX Monitor up to Volume 45. I don't know if this is still
available, but quite an historical gem for questions like these.
best wishes,
Nick

Ya know, I'm still trying to ID a couple of unIDs from 20 years ago,
and maybe
CKPR was one of these...
4/21/1991 0259 ELT Someone under WELO with a "Superstation" slogan ID;
suspecting a Canadian
12/23/1991 0437 ELT Good signal with "Great 58" slogan ID
I heard both of these during my time in Iowa City. Is anyone familiar
enough with what the Canadians on 580 (and there were a bunch of
'em, 20 years
ago) were doing to know what IDs they were or weren't using at the time?

Not exactly a UP, but CKPR-AM 580 kHz Thunder Bay has an incredible daytime
footprint, I could get them in the Southern part of Michigan nulling Traverse
City on 580 which also nulled Windsor on 580. Nighttime you should be able to
hear them all across the midwest even though they drop to 1 kW,
their pattern is
south.
