At a near 40 Km / 25 miles from here, there is a 6 towers array at the CHRC 800 site on the South shore of the St-Lawrence river right in front of Quebec City (directional 50 Kw 24/7) . CHRC has to share the channel with Montreal's CJAD (with 50/10 Kw 4 towers directional pattern). There are more or less 230 Km / 143 miles between the two transmitters.

I had the occasion to take some shots at the CHRC transmitting site a couple of years ago. My first impression of the site was that it appeared really neglected if not deserted. This is a shot of the transmitter building with 5 of the 6 towers:

...and one of the many bilingual warning signs found on the site:

If you take a look at the CHRC pattern: http://transition.fcc.gov/ftp/Bureaus/MB/Databases/AM_DA_patterns/305452-55068.pdf and knowing that my QTH is somewhere between 240° and 260°, it happens that during the night, CHRC gets easily outmatched by other stations. When propagation becomes favourable (during aurora for instance), even TWR from Bonaire can be a spoilsport:

In my opinion, KFXR on 1190, near Dallas, Texas,
has a night pattern that is the champ.

Im sure there are tighter ones (Such as 990 Muncie, IN with 250W/6 towers)
but the two I mention below I've personally seen just how tight the patterns
are.

WJIL 1550 Jacksonville, IL with 1KW/4 towers Day and 10W/4 towers night.

The towers are so inline and the pattern is so tight, you can be driving
down the highway in the middle of the day and pull off to the side of the
highway to the point where you are so inline you can online see 1 tower.... and
be smack dab in a null less then 1 mile away.

The signal is so weak at night, you can SEE the towers and if you're on the
wrong side of the pattern, you don't hear them.

I also drove, well, ok a friend drove, through the null of KHMO 1070
Hannibal, MO when I was in the car. We were probably about 1/2 mile by air from
the 1KW beaming from 6 towers at night and we drove right through a null as we
could SEE the towers.
