A BBC Research Report (RA-25) showed 2 to 3 dB better signal on top of a
160 meter cliff than on the beach below. 200 meters away from the cliff
edge, the improvement was only .4 dB.
The BBC Research Reports are freely available online if anyone is curious.

Hi Bill,
The ocean cliffs on the Oregon coastline seem to really boost the
South Pacific DX signals for me during summer listening sessions, but
I've never run A/B signal level tests with someone at sea level on the
beach, so I can't tell you exactly how much of a gain advantage this
elevation boost provides. My own impression is that the DU-DXing gain
boost provided at "Rockwork" (about 400 feet above sea level) was much
greater than that at Lincoln City (about 80 feet above sea level), but
of course the daily variations in propagation come into play, so it's
difficult to give scientifically accurate judgements for the two
different locations. After experiencing "Rockwork," though, I'm pretty
sure that I'll never DX at Lincoln City again :-)

Subject: [IRCA] Re : IRCA 88--35--2 Oregon Cliff DX
Hi Gary,
I'm not a professional signal seeker and I don't have the experience
in the field so to speak but I'm wondering if there's an advantage of
high elevation near water over sea level right on the beach for
capturing TOs ( trans ocean) signals. Does capture on top of a high
cliff actually result in stronger reception than would a location just
a few feet above water? And what about using the cliff as a domestic
signal nulling wall to reduce signal strength from any inland local
signals that you might want to eliminate to reduce frequency
interference from the back? Let me know if there's any logic in my
thinking about this. Thanks Bill in BC
