Hello All,

Because of the active sun it was a very dreary TP-DXing morning here, with one
strange exception. Most of the Asiatic big guns failed to even manage weak
carriers during sunrise enhancement, and 738-Tahiti's signal stayed at a modest
carrier level. It seemed like the morning would be a total bust, but very late
at 1355 a strong carrier on 693 kHz suddenly came up from the NW direction and
reached a fair audio level (under the domestic splatter). Although this
station's identity presumably should have been the 500 kW NHK2 big gun JOAB (in
Tokyo), there was no propagation at all to Japan on the other frequencies at
the time, and the male and female announcers on 693 seemed to be talking in
fast Chinese (with the female announcer's voice seeming to match that of CNR1's
commonly heard lady). The rapid-fire Chinese sure didn't sound at all like any
of the NHK2 language lessons, but since there hasn't yet been any reception of
China reported on 693 kHz (even at Grayland), I guess!
the station will need to go down as another Chinese mystery here.

73 and Good DX,
