Before purchasing the Tecsun PL-606, last year, I knew that it had
some oddities. I knew about the non-traditional ways of tuning, I knew
about the "smart" light and, like any other radio with a microprocessor,
somewhere on board, I knew that it would have "birdies," some noises
created within the radio - but I did not expect THAT many.

My Gary deBock provided Eton e-100 has a few. The worst, is 730 and that
frequency is essentially dead to me, on the Eton. But the 606 has five
such frequencies. Is my example unique or are most 606's that prone to
internal noise?

Tonight I did an experiment, where I tuned the entire MW band. I ensured
that all TV's in the home were off along with my PC monitor. I did not go
outside as it was too cold but I was far enough away from the PC and the
AT&T U-Verse Residential Gateway (RG) router/modem.

I have divided thew "noisy" frequencies up into three classes: Level 1.
90%+ killed: 1190, 1300, 1460, 1570 and 1680. 1460 was the most voracious.
Level 2 (It would take a decent signal to overcome the noise (50-75%
killed): 730, 810, 970, 1030 and 1620. Finally Level 3's are the ones
where you can hear the birdies but a stronger station could easily supplant
it are 540, 550, 760, 870, 1000, 1010, 1020, 1140, 1350 and 1410. I could
even hear a birdie under WLW, 700, easily one of the strongest nighttime
signals here.

Can anything be dome about these? Would an external antenna (such as a
crate loop or loopstrick transplant) offer enough oomph to overpower the
birdies? I enjoy DX'ing with what I have (meaning barefoot radios) but I'm
somewhat now doubting my decision to buy the PL-606.

Thanks and 73's,
Dave in Indy
