>From Tom Taylor's Radio newsletter: Transmitter fire knocks out two Salem AMs in Seattle.
Bainbridge Island fire marshal Luke Carpenter says it could’ve been worse, given the dry conditions on the island. But for Salem’s conservative talk “Freedom 1590” KLFE and Spanish Christian “Radio Luz 1680” KNTS, it was pretty darn bad. The Bainbridge Island Review<http://tomtaylornow.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=78b390ff9f5b002e3f050238c&id=745e87e794&e=8f13540c27> describes an early-morning fire that started yesterday morning in the transmitter building, “but then spread from the 12 foot by 12 foot structure to nearby grass, and then started a brush fire.” It didn’t become the far larger conflagration that spread on Catalina Island in 2007, when a blaze was sparked by a contractor cutting steel wire in a job for “K-Brite” KBRT, Avalon, CA (740). Salem tells NOW that “Freedom 1590” was back on the air later yesterday, while “Radio Luz” remained off. Engineering-wise, the tower site is a nine-mile ferryboat ride northwest of downtown Seattle, and it’s a two-tower array. KLFE/1590 is directional at night, and needs the second tower for full operation.
