Subject: SBE Meeting Reminder

Hello everyone,

A reminder of our meeting next Tuesday, March 18th at the Pavek. Lunch will be
on your own. Read on for next week's program as well as a potential opportunity
for SBE members to get better insurance rates!

See you then!

Next Tuesday’s SBE Meeting veers away from mainstream broadcast engineering to
look into a different world of ‘engineering’ endeavor: The interest,
experiments, science and empirical observation gathered and displayed by a
hardy band of amateurs called “DX-ers.” These folks take great pride in
scanning the RF spectrum from ‘almost-DC’ to ‘almost-light,’ looking to copy
and verify radio emissions from around and from off the planet.

Mark Durenberger, renouncing his formative years as a child of FM, takes us
into the world of AM DX-ing, to update you on a hobby that’s undergoing a
renewal of interest.  There are several reasons for this fresh attention;
primary among them are the availability of new DSP tools and a better
understanding of antenna theory (yes, even EZNEC)!

What’s coming out of these activities are ways to better explain the
fundamentals of radio reception, and a sharing of the methodology used to
finesse what once was impossible...the capture of a 1-watt signal 1300 miles
away...or the nulling of nearby 50-kilowatt pests to discover a distant station
lurking under that modulation envelope.

This fast-paced hour or so refreshes our understanding of some engineering
principles related to AM reception...from Long-Wave through the Tropical Bands.

We’ll keep you awake!
