And normally their null out west is very effective. It took me about 20
years to hear them for the 1st time, which is why it was so odd to hear
them regularly this past week.

I'm not surprised. WMAQ (now WSCR), WGN, WBBM and WLS are all lower in the band
and nondirectional with one half wavelength towers. WMVP's night pattern has a
massive null to the west to protect KOMO.

Even back in the days when KOMO Seattle had a regular silent period every
Monday morning, I'd try like crazy at 4AM to log WCFL 1000 Chicago here in
SoCal, never with any luck. I was taunted by the fact that I could hear WMAQ,
WGN, WBBM, and WLS all at armchair level. ms

I would wager conditions. They are the usual strength here. Fair to good
signal but never more than that.

Not sure if it's just conditions, or whether something's not quite right
with their night pattern, but WMVP from Chicago on 1000 khz, which is
normally a very rare visitor here, has been heard 3 nights in a row.
It's generally not dominant, but is consistently in the mix, which is not
normally the case. Might be a good opportunity for those out west (and not
too close to KOMO) to log this one.
